Why Do You Purchase a Robotic Lawn Mower?

A neatly trimmed lawn increases the curb appeal of your home manifold. But, what if you don’t have time to do it? Or, just don’t want to spend the weekend cutting grasses instead of vacationing or having some ‘me’ time. A robotic lawn mower is a solution. You can rest in the porch drinking lemonade or out there somewhere when the mower is mowing the lawn in the heat of summer.

There are other apparent benefits to own a robotic lawn mower:

Saves cost and labor.

An automated lawn mower is expensive, but not more than the costs of hiring a professional landscaping service every week. If you don’t have the time or want to cut the grasses, a robotic mower is the best cost-effective and labor-Top 10 Best Robotic Lawn Mowers in 2019saving option.

Eco-friendly.

The robotic mowers depend on an electrical motor for their power. A battery stores power from an electrical outlet and then supply it to the motor when required. Unlike the gas-powered machines, they don’t release smoke or CO2 in the environment. The minimal pollution will be even lesser if you use a renewable source to charge them.

Reach the tight corners.

Every mower knows the difficulty of working on sloped areas and reaching those narrow passages and nooks. You don’t have to worry about these spots when you purchase an automated mower. It can reach all these areas and trim the grasses.

Remote operation.

If you cannot be present at the time of mowing, don’t worry. A robotic mower does not need your presence to operate. You can pre-set the starting time and control its actions from your mobile phone. However, not all the automatic mowers may have this feature.

Except for the high price tag, the robotic lawn mowers don’t have any apparent downside. They have some unique maintenance requirements and careful handling, but that is all.

Also, cut your grass regularly like once or twice in a week than monthly or bi-weekly. Long grass can clog the machine frequently.

The Characteristics of Best-Quality Robotic Lawn Mowers

The robotic lawn mowers are an expensive purchase. You should be aware of the qualities you are after to make sure you are not pouring money down the drain.

Design & Features

The robotic lawn mowers are not huge in size. Most of them are good-looking little machines that pack a punch when Top 10 Best Robotic Lawn Mowers in 2019it comes to trim a lawn.

The cutting height and width is the feature that you should look into first. It determines the highest length of the grass it can cut and the width of the cutting patch. The mowers have a dial with options to adjust the cutting height. Some models allow making these changes through a mobile app. Wide cutting patch means less time to finish mowing a lawn. But, if your lawn or garden has an unusual shape and tight corners, go for a narrow mower. It will fit easily into tight spaces.

Once you have chosen the design and cutting height and width, it is time to look at the features. All the robotic mowers have programming options but the high-quality ones will have features that make the job more convenient.

There should be options for setting up schedules for multiple zones. It’s a great feature if you have a large lawn. You can set the mower to work on specific areas on specific days.

An automatic mower keeps track of the total lawn coverage through the mapping system and advanced algorithms. Some high-tech models have GPS technology too for figuring out the positions. Some others have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a similar feature, allowing the user to control and program it through a mobile app.

The bumping sensors can detect small obstacles and send the mower to another way. Also, the kill switch on the blades gets activated if it’s off-balance or someone lifts it. It’s a great relief if you have kids or pets.

But, what happens if someone tries to steal it? Well, these mowers have standard security features like alarms, pins, and GPS trackers. The alarm goes off and it stops functioning if someone picks it up. No one will be able to run it again without the pin code. The GPS tracker, on the other hand, helps to track down the location of the stolen device.

Installation & Performance

Installing the automated lawn mower can be time-consuming but not difficult at all. Almost all the sellers provide written manuals and online video tutorials, explaining the installation process, features, and functions.

How the mower will know the boundary of your yard? Here comes the mapping. The product will come with a low-Top 10 Best Robotic Lawn Mowers in 2019voltage wire that you have to use to mark the area of your lawn. The mower will not go beyond that perimeter.

The machines also come with a spool of wire, measuring tool for placing the wire, and stakes. Depending on your lawn size or the nooks and crannies it has, it may take one or two hours to set up the machine.

Some manufacturers offer the installation service and some recommend hiring a certified dealer for the task. The service of a dealer can be costly so have a quote upfront.

After the installation, comes the programming part. You just have to tweak some settings in an onboard control panel. There could be options for scheduling cutting times, setting timers, configuring the settings of edge cutting, creating cutting zones, and more. Some models allow setting and controlling these options from your smartphone.

Once you are done with the installation and programming, all you have to do is some routine maintenance work. The tasks involve cleaning the cutting deck, changing the blades, and modifying the settings if required.

Most robotic mowers are capable of handling slopes up to 20 degrees and some can do even better – up to 30 degrees. If your yard is full of slopes and inclines, choose a mower that has large wheels because they can navigate uneven landscape better.

Robotic mowers operate in all weather conditions – even in rainy season. However, working on a wet or muddy yard can be messy because wet grass blades will stick to the cutting deck – requiring frequent cleaning of the deck and cutting blades. Also, the wheels may slip in unfavorable weather conditions. It is better to purchase a mower with a weather-sensing feature. It will return to the base in the event of rain.

Unlike the regular mowing machines, almost all robotic devices operate very quietly. Most of them produce sound between 55dB and 60dB range and you can run them at nights. But, some can create 75dB of sound or more. Their use should be limited to the daytime only.

The robotic lawn mowers draw their charge from a lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack. Machines designed for small lawns will last from 30 minutes to up to 45 minutes or one hour. However, some high-end devices can last up to four hours too and they can easily handle a large property. The charging time can take something between half an hour to two hours.

We’ve rounded up a list of 10 best robotic lawn mowers in the market. They belong to various price range and are equipped with various features. Read the reviews to fix your choice depending on the budget and preferences.

Husqvarna is a Swedish manufacturer of gardening equipment and it has a commercially successful line of automated lawn mowers. But, why does this particular model is at the top of this list? Does it have any special feature to excel others?

Well, the 430X is a high-end model equipped with several smart features that help to keep your property neat and clean. The unit also seems to be a balanced combo of smart features and price.

Design & Features

The 430X is a cute, little machine that looks like a toy sports car. There are control buttons hidden inside a cover and a waterproof LCD display. A big orange-colored emergency break sits in front of the control panel.

The model has a robust build, preventing weather elements to damage its interior components. The wheels are larger than most Husqvarna models. They are tough and can travel up inclines and cruise on slippery surfaces with ease.

The 430X can cover an area as big as 0.8 acres (or 3,200m2) with its three steel razor blades. The cutting height adjustment is a blessing since you can adjust it between 20 and 60 mm.

The machine comes with dual guide wires (unlike a single wire provided with most other models) for mapping the boundary. The GPS navigation system allows controlling the unit from your smartphone. It is possible to customize the mowing spots and preferences.

The 430X is equipped with advanced safety features. It has an alarm system that goes off if someone picks it up. Also, you will get an alert to your smartphone. The problem is the alarm sound is not loud and the text alert can take up to 10 minutes to arrive.

However, taking it off the ground will stop its function that can only be resumed by inserting a PIN code. Also, you can locate its position by using the auto-connect GPS feature.

Installation & Performance

You have to purchase the installation kit separately. Installation and mapping the boundary may take an afternoon or a day but there is nothing complicated. You will need to plug the Husqvarna App sim card to the mower and then download the app to your phone. It will show clear instructions about what to do next.

The blades spin freely to gather enough force to cut only grass and nothing else. The cutting is cleaner and neater than that of a single blade. The smart technology allows it to function according to the height of the grass. You can use the spot cutting feature too to handle areas with overgrown grass.

The mower will cover every nook and corner within the wired perimeter. It also handles inclines about 45 degrees so you can sit relaxed even if your yard has slopes. However, some manual minor cutting may still be needed to edge the lawn.

The WG794 Landroid robotic mower from Worx is an excellent machine for trimming a small piece of land. It offers an excellent cutting capacity and surprisingly quiet operation at an affordable price.

Design & Features

The WG794 Landroid has a cool design and looks like a toy car. It features a two-tone color combo, four wheels, and headlights in the front. A hatch on the top covers the control panel that has an LCD screen and a 17-button keypad. The control menu is straightforward and easy to configure.

The mower is designed for smaller yards measuring up to 0.25 acre. It can climb slopes up to 20 degrees without scalping the ground. Its cutting instrument is a steel disc with three pivoting blades.

The WG794 Landroid has a rain sensor. It also changes direction if bumped into a solid object. The machine sets off an alarm if someone lifts it up but the sound is barely audible unless you are standing close to it. There is no surprise that it claims the third spot in this list. You just need to install the perimeter wire, configure the settings according to your preferences, and forget about it. It will bring the lawn in shape within one or two weeks.

Design & Features

The 315X looks like a miniature version of a futuristic sports car. It features a two-tone plastic body, four stylish wheels, and slim headlights.

The control panel is hidden under a cover on the top while another hatch covers the stop button and the height adjustment knob. You can program the machine from the 19-button keypad or use a mobile app for monitoring and operation. It does not have a remote control but connects to the app through Bluetooth, cellular, and GPS technology.

After establishing the connection to the app from the control panel, you can remotely control the mower, create new schedules, monitor the progress, and do many other things.

The 315X does not have a rain sensor. But, the machine has an IPX4 weatherproof rating so it can be outside when it’s raining. It has a three-blade spinning disc that turns grass blades into fine mulch. The mower can handle 0.4 acres of land and up to 22 degrees of incline with 8.7 inches cutting width and 0.78-2.36 inches cutting heights.

Installation & Performance

The installation kit comes separately – which includes different types of connectors and splices, nearly 500ft of boundary wire, and plastic stakes. You can set the wire by yourself or take the help of a Husqvarna dealer.

After setting up the base station, you have to create a schedule using the control panel. Then download the app, create an account, and connect it to the mower.

4. Robomow RS612 Robotic Lawn Mower

The Robomow RS612 is an efficient mower if you have a deep pocket and want to cut back on your summer yard work. It has loads of fun features to keep the lawn groomed while you can sip into your mojito and relax in the afternoon.

Robomow RS612 Robotic Lawn Mower

Design & Features

Like other Robomow mowers, the RS612 features a modern design and a black/green color combo. It has two blades, two large rear wheels, and one small front wheel.

The machine has a Bluetooth option, allowing you to program and control it from a smartphone app. However, the range will be short sin

ce it is just a Bluetooth connection. You can remotely control the unit via the app to trim some extra spots that were left alone during the regular mowing.

The RS612 has a rain sensor that makes it return to the base station when it starts raining. There is an obstruction sensor too, making the machine to stop and go into the reverse direction when it hits something solid.

Talking about the safety features, there are child lock and PIN code systems, stopping random strangers and children to kick the mower off. it starts beeping loudly if someone tries to take it off the charging station without inserting the PIN. However, just flipping the power switch will turn the alarm off.

Installation & Performance

Setting the RS612 involves placing the green wire across the border of your lawn. It will guide the mower to the places it can and can’t go.

The machine works better when you use it on a medium-sized lawn with not much incline. The brand claims that it can handle 20 degrees of slopes but it is better not to use it on hilly areas.

Also, the RS612 struggles with overgrown grass. If you have an unkempt yard with tall grass, you should better give it a round of trimming with a regular mower before using the robotic mower.

You can divide the lawn area into zones and sub-zones for more efficient mowing. The machine can handle two zones and four sub-zones under each of them. If the grass is thicker or slightly bigger, use the turbo-mow setting, which initiates a slower but more powerful cutting.

The mower has an edge mode to cut the grass near the wire perimeter. However, you may still need to use a weed whacker to have perfectly trimmed edges.

The RS612 will take almost a day for a full charge. It runs for almost 90 minutes on a single charge. Running it for this period every day for a few weeks is enough to have a nicely manicured yard.

Pros

  • Modern, stylish design
  • Remote control with a phone app
  • Child lock option
  • Security alarm and PIN code option

Cons

  • Recharging takes almost a day
  • Not good for hilly areas

5. Robomow RX12 Robotic Lawn Mower

If you have a beautiful home with a small lawn but don’t have enough time to keep it manicured, the Robomow RX12 will be handy. It is also much cheaper than other products on this list. The budget-friendly option saves your time and the embarrassment of leaving the lawn with overgrown grass.

Robomow RX12 Robotic Lawn Mower

Design & Features

The small RX12 look like a cute toy. The green/black color combination looks nice but the green upper may blend into the green field. The robust build and strong wheels ensure years of

performance.

The RX12 is ideal for lawns up to 1/20 of an acre. With the 0.5 to 1.75 inches of cutting heights and slope climbing capacity of up to 15%, it is equipped with every feature to keep the lawn in a good shape. It works with one single blade. It is sharp, solid, and strong but multiple blades would provide better performance than just one blade.

You can pair up the machine with a smartphone app for enabling remote operation. However, it connects to the app via Bluetooth so you cannot put the commands from a distant place.

The safety features of the RX12 are impressive. It has a child lock feature that requires the pressing of two buttons in the correct order to set the machine off. Otherwise, pressing the ‘Go’ button for two seconds is enough. There is an emergency stop button too for ceasing the operation quickly.

The RX12 has lift and obstruction sensors. It will stop functioning if anyone lifts it from the ground. Also, facing a hard object on the way will make it change the direction.

The RX12’s anti-theft feature goes a step further than most other robotic mowers. You have to use not only a PIN code but have to insert it from the mobile phone that is pre-registered with the mower.

Installation & Performance

Installing the mower does not involve any complicated step. All the necessary tools come with the mower, including 600ft of wire and 250 pegs. There are also a Roboruler for wire placement, a charging station, and a DVD explaining the installation process. There is an owner’s manual too for those who are comfortable with following written instructions.

The charging time may frustrate you since the RX12 takes 16 to 20 hours for a full charge. Although it runs for 120 minutes and can cover an area of 2000 sq ft on a single charge. However, the mowing time could be shorter for taller and thicker grass.

Don’t set the RX12 on a ground that has not been mowed for a long time. It will struggle to cut longer grass. You should mow such lawns with a regular mower first before using the automatic machine.

Pros

  • Looks cute and modern
  • Has a robust build
  • Lift and obstruction sensors
  • Anti-theft feature
  • Child lock safety feature
  • Affordable price

Cons

  • Recharging takes long hours
  • Suitable for small grounds only

6. Husqvarna 450X (Automower Only)Husqvarna 450X (Automower Only)

The Husqvarna 450X is almost similar to the 430X model in terms of mowing and navigation features. But, the 450X is even better when it comes to making your lawn look pristine. So, why did it not go to this list’s top spot? Well, the price is a big factor. You have to spend nearly $1,000 more for this unit than the 430X. Otherwise, it offers a clinical performance in keeping the courtyard green, healthy, and perfectly mowed.

Design & Features

The 450X looks just like the 430X – the miniature of a sports car. It also has a robust build with two pairs of strong wheels.

The smart features allow you to operate it through your smartphone and the GPS technology ensures security against being stolen. It has an alarm and text alert system if someone tries to pick it up. Also, the PIN system is a nice feature s the unit will not kick off until you insert the code. The GPS option helps you to track its position if someone runs away with it.

How about physical safety? It sounds scary that a robot is roaming freely with spinning sharp blades. Fortunately, the blades will stop if they hit anything, unlike a regular mower. So, even if you accidentally cut your hand or feet, you won’t lose a finger.

Installation & Performance

Why would anyone spend almost $3,500 for a lawnmower? Well, because mowing the yard is a sweaty job and this Husqvarna 430X can cover a huge ground – up to 1.25 acres. This is some serious amount of labor force packed into this machine. It will be a treat to put the mower to work on the greenery.

For a big piece of land or yard with overgrown grass, the 450X is the perfect mower to keep the mess under control. It does not include an installation kit but the setup is not complicated.

Set a perimeter with green wire to let mower know its boundary. You will need to create no-mow zones by running the wire around the obstacles like garden ornaments, shed, fire pit, and other similar areas. The mower can slice up the wire if you stick it too far up the ground. But, it stops when that happens so you will easily find the spot where repair is needed.

The 450X has the spot-mowing feature that automatically gets activated when it encounters longer grass. There is a GPS navigation feature too for remotely guiding the machine through tight spots and narrow passageways. It can also climb slopes up to 45 degrees.

There are default settings but you can program the machine as per your preferences. You can tweak almost every option – cutting time, cutting height, closeness to the boundary wire, and many other things. It will return to the charging base when running out of juice. It will run for one hour and fifteen minutes for nearly an hour of charge.

Pros

  • Looks stylish
  • Spot mowing option
  • Plenty of smart features
  • Anti-theft options
  • GPS tracking

Cons

  • Time-consuming installation
  • Separate purchase of the installation kit
  • Needs a fair amount of tweaking
  • Expensive

7. Robomow RC304 Robotic Lawn Mower

The Robomow mowers is a great option if you cannot afford the exorbitant Husqvarna machines. Priced at almost $1,000, the RC304 makes the sweaty chose of lawn-mowing a breeze. Just set it up according to your preferences and forget about the lawn!

Robomow RC304 Robotic Lawn Mower

Design & Features

There is nothing to dislike about the design of the RC304. it looks like a little toy car. The b

lack body is modern and stylish but the green upper panel blends into the grassy surface. There is a buttoned control panel at the end of the upper panel.

It is a three-wheeled machine featuring two large motorized rear wheels and one small troll

ey wheel on the front. The cutting work is done by one single blade with three heads, measuring 28cm across.

It is possible to control the RC304 from an app. You don’t even need to go outside to kick off the operation. Just configure the cutting height and launch the mower through the app.

You can set the cutting schedules any way that suits you. Program it to set off at the same time every day or week, or do the mowing at random times. However, due to the rain sensor, it won’t start the scheduled mowing if there is a possibility of a downpour.

The machine has lift and tilt sensors so it will stop working when lifted up or fallen. It does not operate without a PIN code and you also need to pair it to the base station.

Installation & Performance

The RC304 needs proper installation and setup to perform without any trouble. You can contact Robomow to send a professional installer to do the task for you. The process can take several hours or even a day if you want to do it yourself.

The installation is simple but takes some time. Place the wire across the boundary of your lawn and use plastic pegs to do the mapping perfectly. Also, don’t forget to clean up the lawn before setting off the robot mower. The RC304 does not stop when it hits something other than grass. If there are pet poops or plastic toys on the ground, the machine will mulch them and spread across the lawn.

The mower navigates in a straight line unless it hits the boundary wire. Then, it will turn around and resume cutting grass in a different direction. It can leave some patches that you can cover later by guiding the mower through a virtual joystick in the app.

The RC304 can handle a land sizing 1/10 of an acre and its maximum slope angle is 36 degrees. The battery takes an hour to charge fully and lasts almost an hour.

Pros

  • Sleek and nice design
  • Can control via an app
  • Robomow provides installation support
  • Proper safety features

Cons

  • Battery performance is unsatisfactory
  • May leave some patches untouched

8. 4 Ocean Robotic Lawn Mower4 Ocean Robotic Lawn Mower

The robotic lawn mower from 4 Ocean is a pre-programmed machine. People who don’t want to spend hours tweaking the settings of their mower will definitely like this one. It will keep your lawn trimmed with straightforward functions.

Design & Features

Despite having almost the same price tag as the Robomow RC304, this mower does not have that stylish look or robust built. However, it does the job well when it comes to cutting grass.

It is a pre-programmed machine that has rain, humidity, and bump sensors. It returns to the base station when there is rain or a high level of humidity in the air. Also, bumping into a solid object activates its bump sensor. It then stops and runs in the opposite direction.

However, you can still tweak some settings like the mowing time and splitting the work area. You can set the time for it to start working at any time. And, it is possible to divide a large lawn into three sections so that the machine can work faster.

The lawn mower has four different language settings. The start key and PIN code ensure safety against thieves.

Installation & Performance

The installation does not require much – setting up the wire periphery and the charging station. With 32cm cutting width and 3/4/5cm of cutting heights, it can tackle any land measuring between 100 and 1,000sqm.

Sometimes, the mower can leave out some small patches. There is a remote control to guide the machine to those areas and finish the mowing.

Does your lawn has slopes? No problem. The mower can climb up to 35 degrees of inclines.

The lithium batteries produce an impressive 2.5 hours of working time. However, they need charging for the same amount of time – a bummer! It returns to the base when the battery is low and gets back to mowing after recharging.

The batteries are not included in the machine. You need to purchase them separately.

Pros

  • Mostly pre-programmed
  • Sensors for rain, humidity, and bumps
  • Impressive battery life
  • Anti-theft features
  • Great for small lawns

Cons

  • Few features considering the price
  • Lengthy charging time
  • Batteries not included

9. Husqvarna 220 AC Electric Robotic Automower

The Husqvarna 220 AC robotic lawn mower is a premium mower at a premium price. It comes with improved Husqvarna 220 AC Electric Robotic Automowercutting ability and all the features you would expect in a high-end automated mower. But, do all the bells and whistles justify the nearly $2,500 price tag? Read the short review and decide for yourself.

Design & Features

Just like other Husqvarna mowers, this model is also a handsome looking machine. The contemporary style and strong build make it a prime addition to any lawn.

Hidden under the small cover on the upper panel are an LCD screen, 19-button touchpad, and a large knob for adjusting the cutting height. The cutting width is 8.7 inches and the height ranges between 0.8 and 2.4 inches.

It has three pivoting razor blades that can cut the grass across an area of 0.5 acres of land. Also, the mower can handle 35% of maximum incline.

The machine has an anti-theft alarm system and PIN code lock to prevent stealing. The tilt and lift sensors also do an excellent job of keeping the thieves away.

Installation & Performance

Installation may take some time because you have to set the mowing periphery with the wire. To finish the task without any mistake, read the owner’s manual and do a trial run before finalizing the border. Secure the wore with plastic stakes after working out the layout and the perfect spot for the charging station.

This model does not have the Wi-Fi option or a mobile app. The only way to fix the settings is to use the onboard keypad. You can adjust the mowing time and allocate it to any percentage to different parts of the lawn.

However, it does not have the multi-zone feature. It is not suitable for a yard that has several parts separated by pavements or dividers.

The mower can handle a half acre of land with an 8.7-inch of cutting width, which is perfect for small passages and tight spots. Some models have a wider cutting width but they cannot perfectly trim the edges and tricky areas.

The carbon steel razor blades are super sharp and cut grass from all directions. Their clean cuts help growing healthier grass and give the lawn a gorgeous finish. You have to mow the lawn with a regular mower and bag the clippings before setting it off for the first time. Otherwise, it cannot run at its normal speed.

The Ni-MH battery is a disappointment since it runs for only 45 minutes and has a shorter overall lifespan. The 54-minute recharging time is probably the only good thing about it.

Pros

  • Looks nice and stylish
  • Sharp razor blades
  • Quick recharging time
  • Anti-theft features

Cons

  • No multi-zone feature
  • Cannot operate remotely
  • Poor battery performance
  • Expensive

10. MowBo Automatic Robot Lawn MowerMowBo Automatic Robot Lawn Mower

Design & Features

The MowBo automatic mower is a small machine with a black plastic body. The upper panel has an LCD screen and a keypad hidden under a small cover. It has three sharp razor blades and three wheels. The rear wheels are larger and have spikes on them to provide better traction on tricky surfaces.

The machine has options for setting specific time, date, duration, and/or zone for the mowing. If you think a particular area needs more attention, it is possible to set the mower to operate there for a longer period.

The machine needs a PIN code to enter to start functioning. It protects it from thieves.

The mower is much lighter than a push and riding mower – 75% and 300% respectively. It means that it will put less stress on the grass and soil, and keep them healthier.

Installation & Performance

MowBo provides all the components and tools necessary for the installation. There is also an owner’s manual with proper instructions. You can additionally purchase a remote control and a shelter.

Set the perimeter wire up along the border of the lawn. Also, station the charging pad near a power outlet. When you are done, program the time, date, and other options. Then, simply forget about the mower. It will keep the lawn trimmed and manicured throughout the year.

The mower has razor instead of steel blades. The razor blades offer much cleaner cuts whereas the steel ones mostly tear up the grass. The razor blades do not easily get clogged even when the ground is wet or dewy and they keep the grass in a healthier state.

The robot can mow up to 3/4 acres of land with a 30-degree slope capability. The batteries run for 2 to 3 hours and take 2.5 hours for a full recharge.
