When the strip cools the strip straightens restoring the connection or forming a bridge for the electricity to flow again. The circuit is complete and so is the heat. When this strip gets hotter it bends to break the circuit again cutting off the electricity.

Thermostat with Gas-Filled Bellows – The drawback of bimetallic strips is that they do not respond quickly to thermal changes, thus gas-filled bellows are used. This thermostat has gas-filled bellows between a pair of metal discs. These discs with a large surface area react quickly to the change in temperature. They are corrugated to make them flexible and springy. When the temperature rises in the room the gas expands and forces the discs apart. There is an inner disc that pushes against the microswitch situated in the middle of the thermostat to switch off the circuit. As the temperature drops the gas in the bellows contracts and the discs fall with them releasing the microswitch. The circuit is switched on and the heat is turned on again.

Wax Thermostats – Above mentioned thermostats used the change in the physical state of matter in temperature regulation. Some use change in the state of matter for the same purpose. These thermostats employ wax plugs enclosed inside a sealed chamber. As the temperature rises the wax melts changing from solid to liquid and expanding greatly. This expansion pushes the rod such that it switches on or off the part it is fitted there to operate. For example, the cars cooling system or the regulator that mixes hot and cold water in your shower use wax thermostats.

Types of Thermostats

Most cold countries use furnaces to heat their homes. They use a central furnace fuelled by oil, propane, natural gas or wood to produce the heat. This heat is distributed around the house via a hydronic or radiator system or duct-based system. These are classified under Low Voltage Systems.

A small percentage of homes are heated by suing electricity-based heating systems like wall heaters, baseboard heaters, forced fan heaters that convert electrical energy into heat energy.
